We have started our mission in a rural community in Uganda, our first project is a partnership in a Pig Sharing Program. The project targets 17 villages, remote villages in South West Uganda representing over 2,000 households. In accordance with our mission LKA Foundation’s partnership in the project is conditional on the project being exclusively for women. This objective aims to improve the livelihoods and independence of women by providing a source of sustainable income in addition to improving their families’ nutritional intake.

In Uganda, pigs offer the best financial returns, because they are easy to keep as they can be fed on foliage which is readily available as is the market, pork being the the most consumed meat in Uganda.

Pig Sharing Project, in partnership with LKA Foundation, has raised funds to procure and donate over 250 piglets to women in rural South West Uganda to date. Women who receive piglets are required to team together in groups of three to care for the piglet and raise it until a litter of newborn piglets enables them to separate and run their own operation independently. This allows them to share the work to fit around their other responsibilities and provides accountability to each other to improve success rates.

What we’ve accomplished:

Three of the pigs recently had their first set of babies, we are anticipating more births in the next few months. In addition to that, we now have a total of ten expecting mama pigs and one more birth. We are anticipating more births in the next few weeks. We will continue to raise funds to purchase more piglets and more grown ones for reproduction as we continue to supply more villages.
